Lokta is an evergreen shrub found between the altitudes of 1600m to 4000m on the southern slopes of the Himalayas. This indigenous handmade paper is renowned for its special texture, exceptional durability and its resistance to tearing, humidity, insects and mildew. The oldest available manuscripts of buddhist texts, royal edicts and legal documents are recorded on lokta paper.
The paper making process involves cooking the bark, washing, chopping and beating with a wooden hammer. The soft pulp is blended with water and then poured over a wooden framed fine mesh and spread evenly by gently shaking the floating frame in water before being sun dried.
